Outer Island was my choice for an homemade sea kayak in order to participate to the Vogalonga in Venice. At the bottom of this page you may find a synthesis of the reasons of my choice and the links to the bidding kayaks I found.
My intentions are transformend in reality and my works are ongoing as follows:
1st October: strongback
13th October: forms are set on strongback and the first 4 strips (2 on keel 2 on water line) are positioned
26th October: stripping from keel to waterline is completed and accent strip positioned
4th November: stripping from water line to shear line completed
5th November: strips of outer stems glued
10th November: hull ready to fiberglass
22nd November: hull fiberglassing
25th November: kayak flipped over
26th November: deck stripping
6th December: deck finished
15th December: deck fiberglassed
16th December: deck and hull separated
13 January: inside hull and deck fiberglassed
22nd January: cockpit and bulkheads
27th January: cockpit finished
8th February: deck and hull ready to be glued
9th February: deck and hull glued
25th March: first finishing hand
21st April: kayak compleated
22 April: launch
27 May: Vogalonga
KAYAK REQUIREMENTS
−high speed: 5.5 mt lenght, less than 55 cm width, round bottom for minimum drag;
−low windage: aft keel dimensioned in order to avoid rudders or skegs, low back deck;
−medium loading capability: carry a weekend trip maximun;
−good rolling ability : low volume, low back deck;
−design: low volume strip built kayak following the Grenland style.
